Definition
Simply put, Shutdown Maintenance is maintenance that can only be performed while equipment is not in use. Shutting down machinery can be costly, but sometimes due to the nature of the defective part/machine, shutdown maintenance is the only viable maintenance procedure. Technicians will do all that they can to avoid a complete shutdown. In some industrial applications (power generation for example), a shutdown can mean enormous financial losses.
